Chiropractic

Chiropractic is concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuro-musculoskeletal system.  Simply put, a chiropractor will determine which muscles and joints are not moving and functioning properly and then will gently help restore their movement.  This treatment aims to decrease inflammation, reduce pain, and allow you to return to your daily activities and functions.

What to expect?

  • Lots of questions and lots of tests.  In order to determine whether or not we can help you, and then how to help you, we have to establish a diagnosis.
  • Once this is completed, we will set up our “plan of action.”
    • If you are accepted as a patient, this is an estimate of how long and how frequently you will need to be treated, and of course what each treatment will involve.
    •  If we do not think you can benefit from a chiropractor, then a referral to another professional will be made.
  • Since our initial goal is to provide some pain relief as quickly as possible, we will treat you today, as long as we do not need to send you for x-rays or other tests first.
  • The treatment may involve muscle work, spinal adjustments, or the use of machines such as ultrasound.
  • All of your questions will be answered before we proceed with any treatment.

What to expect after treatment?

  • The treatment has changed your body for the better – ie. It has increased movement and decreased inflammation.  Although this is a positive change, our bodies are resistant to any and all changes.  This means that you may experience some discomfort.  If this occurs, don’t worry.  It is likely temporary, part of the healing process, and probably manageable with ice.
  • Likely, you will be feeling better.  The pain will still be there, but probably not as sharp.  With further treatment, we will continue to help you feel better.  Remember that healing is a process, not a magical quick fix.
  • A phone call from Dr. Adler.  Just to check in and see how you are doing, and answer any more questions.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy treatment includes therapeutic exercises and manual therapy to promote independence and help you recover from injury, reduce pain and stiffness, and increase mobility.  We do this by:

  • Promoting optimal mobility, physical activity and overall health and wellness.
  • Preventing and managing disease, injury, disability, and maintaining functional independence and physical performance through therapeutic exercise programs, and other interventions.
  • Educating and planning maintenance and support programs to prevent re-occurrence, re-injury or functional decline.

What to expect?

Physiotherapists are trained to assess your condition, diagnose the problem, and help you understand what’s wrong. Your treatment plan will take into account your lifestyle, activities, and general health.

  • You can expect a 30 – 45 minute assessment to determine the source of the pain.
  • A treatment plan will be set up for you over the following weeks to help get you out of pain and get you back to your full range of motion.
  • The final phase of treatment will consist of exercises to ensure that the pain does not return.
  • Physiotherapy treatment plans could include exercise, manual therapies, acupuncture or electrical modalities such as TENS machines or ultrasound.

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy is a comprehensive intervention involving manual manipulation of muscles and tendons to decrease pain, muscle soreness and muscle spasm and to improve general mobility. It also increases the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the muscle tissues and aids in the circulatory, digestive, lymphatic systems. Massage has a significant effect on the natural healing process of the body and works well in conjunction with physiotherapy, chiropractic and acupuncture.

  • Relaxation Massage is the manipulation of the soft tissue to improve circulation, increasing heart rate and lymphatic flow which promotes relaxation and relief of stress.
  • Therapeutic Massage assists in the healing and is specific to an injury or muscular dysfunction or imbalance. This treatment is often deeper tissue work and is beneficial for injuries, including sports injuries.
  • Our team of Registered Massage Therapists use various techniques, however the Swedish Massage Technique is most commonly used.

What to expect?

  • Massage involves acting on and manipulating the body with pressure – structured, unstructured, stationary, or moving – tension, motion, or vibration, done manually or with mechanical aids.
  • Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, joints, or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. Massage can be applied with the hands, fingers, elbows, knees or forearms.
  • On the massage table, make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session. Many people will close their eyes and relax, and some will talk during the session.
  • After the massage most people feel more relaxed and relieved, and some will feel immediate freedom from pain or tension and have increased range of motion. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity.  Since toxins such as lactic acid are released from your muscle tissue during a massage, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water following your massage to ensure that these toxins will be flushed from your bloodstream, rather than reabsorbed into your muscles. It is not uncommon to feel some mild soreness after a massage, especially a deep tissue massage.

Kinesiology

Also known as Human Kinetics, Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement. Kinesiologists work closely with physiotherapists, chiropractors and massage therapists to address physiological and mechanical conditions. Through fitness, movement and muscle testing, kinesiologists design and implement rehabilitative programs constructed to maximize your daily functions.

What to expect?

  • Principles from Physiotherapy, Chiropractic and Massage Therapy are applied and augmented in Kinesiology sessions.
  • In our sessions, we will perform orthopaedic tests, fitness and movement assessments to determine muscular imbalances in your body and use simple exercises to activate those muscles properly.
  • We can create home-based exercise programs with you and encourage you to take your physical well being into your own hands, becoming more independent.

Orthotics

Orthotics are custom made insoles for your shoes or boots that correct the way you stand, walk or run. Many people experience pain that can be caused by abnormal mechanics (the way your feet move and function). The main purpose of orthotics is to eliminate any foot, ankle, knee or hip pain, and to ensure that small issues such as bunions don't progress to major problems. This is accomplished by ensuring that with each step, your body weight is absorbed and transferred along your foot as easily and comfortably as possible. We understand that your feet are the foundation of your entire body and they do an incredible amount of work each day. The smallest imbalance can cause a great deal of discomfort.

Custom orthotics help to restore normal balance and function and bring relief from fatigue and pain. Orthotics fit comfortably in all variety of footwear without adding unnecessary bulk to the inside of your shoes or boots.

Custom made orthotics gently and consistently place your feet into the correct position for standing, walking and running. Pressure points, improper rotation of the foot, painful muscle strain, and abnormal forces on the legs, hips and spine are eliminated because custom orthotics enable your feet to function properly.

Footprints are like fingerprints. The custom-made orthotic is vastly different from over the counter insoles. They are specifically designed for you.

Dr. Corey Adler will determine if orthotics is needed, and if they are, he will then get an exact impression.

What to expect?

  • Similar to other complaints, we will perform a history and examination of your feet.
  • If it is determined you need orthotics, we will have you walk on our gait analysis mat.
  • This mat has thousands of pressure sensors and takes 150 images per second as you walk on it which enables us to have an accurate picture of your feet while they are walking.
  • We send the data directly to the lab where they create a completely customized orthotic that will perfectly fit your foot and help correct any issue you may be experiencing.
  • Orthotics arrive approximately 7-10 days later at our office and we will contact you to pick them up at that time.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an effective and naturally relaxing form of medicine used as an adjunctive therapy.  The principle is to remedy the root causes of illness as well as the symptoms.  Acupuncture practitioners use thin sterile needles inserted superficially into specific areas of the body to initiate healing, promote health and alleviate physical pain.

What to expect?

  • Single-use, sterile, disposable needles are used in our clinic.
  • Some people obtain relief immediately, after a few hours, and some after a few days. Some require several treatments before responding, and a few do not respond.
  • Your symptoms may worsen before they improve, however this usually would only last 1-2 days.
  • Feelings of aching, heat or heaviness are often expected to occur during treatment. These are descriptions of the “deQui effect” reported in Chinese medicine and are only felt briefly during the session.
  • Before your first treatment we will review the side effects, as well as what to do before and after acupuncture treatment.
  • Your health practitioner needs to know if you are pregnant or think  you may be, if you have ever experience a fit, faint or funny turn, if you have a bleeding disorder, are taking anti-coagulants or any other medications, if you have a pacemaker or if you have lymphodema (whether it be active or not).
